About Kristina Marusic
I'm an author and journalist. I work full time for Environmental Health News, covering issues related to environmental health and justice.
My first book, "A New War on Cancer: The Unlikely Heroes Revolutionizing Prevention," was published on May 11, 2023. It's about an emerging national movement focused on fighting cancer by stopping widespread exposure to carcinogenic chemicals, and it's available in bookstores everywhere.
I've received recognition or awards from the Society of Environmental Journalists, the Association of Health Care Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Institute of Health Care Management, the Group Against Smog and Pollution, and the Carnegie Science Center for my reporting on environmental health and justice.
You can find my most recent reporting here.
I'm also the co-founder of the Pittsburgh chapter of the National Association of LGBTQ Journalists (a.k.a. NLGJA).
I previously worked as a freelance journalist covering LGBT equality, feminism, social and environmental justice, activism, and politics with bylines at CNN, Slate, Vice, Women's Health, the Washington Post, MTV News, The Advocate, Logo TV's NewNowNext, and Bustle, among many others. I believe that true, well-told stories have the power to change the world for good.
I hold an MFA in Creative Nonfiction and proudly consider myself a word nerd. My narrative essays have appeared in literary magazines including Creative Nonfiction and Flyway.
When I'm not reading or writing, I like to be traveling and eating fancy vegetarian food. I've gone on adventures in Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, China, India, Vietnam, Venezuela, Brazil, South Africa, Tanzania, and much of Europe, and I spent a year living in Taiwan. I'm on a lifelong mission to sample the savory pancakes of all nations.
